Intradermal Skin Testing
The intradermal allergy test
The intradermal test is the golden standard for horses with allergies. It can detect and quantify sensitivities of your horse for certain allergens (pollen of herbs, trees, plants, flowers, insect extracts, mites, molds or animals).
In this test, 50 allergen extracts are injected into the skin of your horse. The reactions are then read and interpreted several times until 24h after injection. Finally, the test must be interpreted according to the environment and management of your horse but also the type of problems and seasonality.
Allergenospecific immunotherapy
The idea behind treatment with allergenospecific immunotherapy (hypo- or desensitization) is that the horse progressively becomes less or un- sensitive to the allergens to which he is allergic.
A therapy is therefore composed of allergens to which your horse is allergic. Specifically, it involves subcutaneous punctures to achieve a specific protocol with doses that increase gradually.
